I translate complicated into human

I am Alexander Chernov, a principal product designer. I have designed fintech, trading and AI products since 2005, most of that time for banks and brokers: ATON, VTB, Raiffeisen, Renaissance Capital. Twenty years of making complicated things simple, in places where a mistake costs money: investment, banking, trading. Mostly banks and brokers, plus one law firm that wanted its own LLM. Complexity cannot be hidden. It can be organized, and that is the work.

I sold my first website in 2005, to a construction company, paid in cash and a bathroom refit. It ran without a single change until 2019. Fourteen years, longer than most design trends live. That is when I decided to make things that outlast fashion.

After that the complexity only grew. A German maker of heating equipment, packaging and industrial design (I saw that packaging again in 2023, still the same). One of the most visited online hypermarkets in the Russian web, where I was the only designer and learned to count design in money through A/B tests. The studio Blackwood took me from senior designer to art director, with projects for Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, Salesforce and Kodak. After that came design teams under NDA, mostly for banks and investment firms. Seven years at ATON, one of Russia’s largest independent investment houses: the design system, ATON Space, ATON Line, and the research the team used to redraw the client path. VTB CIB was a team of designers and researchers inside Russia’s second-largest bank. Now I work with Raiffeisen, the bank and its asset management company, in parallel.

The word “now” matters here. Over these years AI moved from a curiosity into part of my working process: reading context, checking scenarios for missing states, UX copy, documentation. The decisions are a different matter. I make the final call.

02 Art direction

Design scales through people

My school is a studio school. At Blackwood dozens of projects ran through my hands in parallel, from packaging to campaigns for Coca-Cola and Salesforce. That is where I learned the one art director skill that matters, seeing where a layout breaks before the client sees it. I brought that school into fintech. At ATON and VTB I built and ran teams of designers and researchers: hiring, onboarding, reviews, the design process.

A review at my table has nothing to do with taste. The decision gets taken apart against the data and against the system it lives in. Mentoring is there so that in six months the person closes on their own what they brought me yesterday. I hire slowly and let people go free fast. The best measure of my work is the month the team stops asking me things.

03 Method

What I do differently

I speak the language of engineering

I can code. Developers keep testing this claim. It means I argue with engineers on their own terms, and handoff here runs all the way to release.

I design on real data

No abstract personas along the lines of “Maria, 34, likes yoga.” Interviews, live scenarios and production data: long surnames that break the table columns, a minus on the account balance. The regulatory limits come with it.

I count design in money

A habit from the e-commerce years. Every screen has a price. Conversion and the time an operation takes, plus the cost of an error. A beautiful decision that does not add up is a decoration.

I take it all the way to a product

What I hand over is a system the team shipped. Sometimes the team is me alone, see AI Lab below.

04 Credo

Meaningful order

The home page of this site carries the Papanek quote about design as the “conscious and intuitive effort to impose meaningful order.” I check against it more often than against the weather forecast. In practice it means this: simplicity is the organization of complexity. A good interface does not pretend that derivatives are easy. It lays the hard part out in the order a person thinks in.

The second belief: I do not choose between beauty and data. A decision has to be justified and it has to be beautiful. Design lives exactly at the point where science and art balance each other.

Beautiful and broken is a painting. Ugly and working works only for now.

And I still take my inspiration from nature. It is the chief engineer, four billion years without a single broken release.

05 AI Lab

Beliefs compiled into products

Saying “I understand AI” is easy. One question settles it: show me the product. Here they are: Black Cube is an on-premise LLM for law firms, running inside the company’s own network, with the legal database updated every day. The voice agent stays on point and sounds human. b8q is an enterprise messenger with chats, calls, a kanban board and an AI assistant. DigestAI is a publication about artificial intelligence, and every piece in it is checked by an editor. Fitopedia is an encyclopedia of 534 plants that recognizes them from a photograph.

I did each one from the idea and the interface down to the model and the code. This is a way of thinking. When you design an AI product for a client, it helps to know in advance where the technology has edges.

Chief Reviewing Officer

Versace the cat

Every layout at home gets a final review from a black cat named Versace. She reviews in silence and sends no comments, the best stakeholder of my career. She rejects everything approved after 11pm. In the museum of my work she stands in black onyx.

The Russian Counter-Strike cup

Yes, in 2016. Yes, 1.6, the classic never dies. A useful experience for a designer: dozens of decisions a round on incomplete information, teamwork under pressure. If you were outplayed, nobody is to blame but you.

Museum

Instead of a PDF deck I built a three-dimensional museum of my own work: rooms from art deco to a neural garden, paintings in gilt frames, interactive exhibits, easter eggs, Versace in onyx and two ducks. A first-person walk, and it needs a computer with a keyboard and a mouse. It is the most honest “about me” I have.
